LOL

LOL is a youth-led, created, maintained, and governed digital creative social media platform — a living laboratory for young people. It can be read as both the **Lab of Laughter, Life and Learning** and the **League of Learners**: a space where young people come together to experiment, express, organise, and grow.

> LOL is a Laboratory of Laughter, Life and Learning

# LOL Fish Club Participants in LOL are imagined as a vibrant ecosystem of LOL Fish — a diverse shoal of creative, curious, and playful individuals. The **LOL Fish Club** is both a metaphor and a membership layer: a way of expressing identity, belonging, and contribution within the system.

Each “fish” brings their own style, skills, and personality. Together, they form a living, evolving culture — collaborative rather than competitive, expressive rather than performative.

# Work, rest and play At its core, LOL is structured around a simple human rhythm: - **Work (Learning)** — making, coding, storytelling, building skills. - **Rest (Life)** — relationships, wellbeing, reflection, identity. - **Play (Laughter)** — creativity, humour, performance, imagination.

Rather than separating these domains, LOL blends them into a continuous, participatory culture — a place where learning feels alive, social life is creative, and play is meaningful. The platform acts as a **digital commons and coordination layer**, enabling young people to create and run their own media, clubs, and projects. It is not simply a social network, but a **social laboratory**, where ideas can be tested, remixed, and shared across communities.

# The Living Lab LOL operates as a distributed “living lab” made up of local and online nodes. These are often seeded through real-world pop-up projects and events — such as a Hot Dog Stand, Jai’s Art Mobile, or Solar-Powered Tricycles. Each intervention is designed to spark curiosity, creativity, and collaboration.

The key principle is simple: > **Do the event. Plant the seed. Leave a club.**

Every activation leaves behind a LOL Club — a self-organising group of young people who continue the energy of the project in their own way. These clubs are lightweight, diverse, and locally shaped, but connected through the wider LOL network.

# Platform & Media LOL provides tools for: - Creating and sharing media (audio, video, story, code). - Organising events and local gatherings. - Running clubs and collaborative projects. - Participating in playful social games and challenges. It integrates with broader Hitchhiker media layers — including live audio, storytelling, and experimental broadcast formats — enabling young people to become both creators and hosts of their own cultural channels.

# Governance & Values LOL is designed to be **youth-governed**. Adults may support, mentor, and provide infrastructure, but the direction, tone, and culture are shaped by young people themselves. Core values include: - Creativity over consumption. - Participation over passive use. - Privacy, safety, and trust by design. - Diversity as a strength and source of learning. - Humour and play as essential forms of intelligence.

# Legacy LOL is not a single platform but a **growing network of clubs, projects, and communities**. Each event plants a seed; each seed becomes a club; each club contributes back to the wider ecosystem. Over time, this creates a distributed, youth-owned cultural infrastructure — a living, playful, and evolving **Lab of Laughter, Life and Learning**.
